July 10, 2022 – 1 DAY SURFACE TECHNIQUE WORKSHOP
The cost of the workshop is $75.00 materials fee. Registration is required.
Objectives for class-Learn simple hand building techniques to build bust forms
-Develop understanding of what guides you to help your work communicate
-Discover free writing as a way of creating new ideas for work
-Introduction to surface considerations for 2D surfaces and sculptural forms
July 8-9, 2022 - 2 DAY FIGURE WORKSHOP – Cost is $260 which includes a bag of clay.

The workshop is open to all levels of experience and to those who want to improve their
hand building skills. Students will explore their ability to develop content and build
forms that represent the human embodiment of complex emotions. Exploration to play
and a desire for experimentation is important to artists who want to improve their
work. This workshop will offer several ways to help you open up to thinking about the
development of work through form, technique and idea. Slab and pinch methods of
building will be taught as a way to create expressive bust forms
July 10, 2022 – 1 DAY SURFACE TECHNIQUE WORKSHOP
The cost of the workshop is $75.00 materials fee. Registration is required.
Students will be introduced to a variety of surface treatments for both greenware and bisque
ware. This is a hands-on workshop. Melisa will demonstrate a variety of surface treatments and
then students will be given time to experiment with the many options. Students may bring their
own pieces to practice demonstrated techniques. Greenware tiles will also be supplied.
For greenware, the following techniques will be demonstrated: Lino printing. positive
and negative paper stencil, silk screen, decals, thread or similar objects to create
texture, wax resist carved or as a mask, traced imagery, slip build up using fabric. Melisa
will demonstrate layering these techniques.
For bisque ware, Melisa will demonstrate some post fired techniques including the use
of graphite and watercolor pencils as well as discuss painterly surfaces.
Melisa Cadell is a studio artist and educator who lives in the mountains of Western North
Carolina with her family. She has been sculpting since 1998 with clay, paper and steel. Recently
she has been experimenting with video and stop motion. Melisa is most fascinated with what
can be relayed in a single thought working out new ways to communicate with her audience.
Cadell holds a BFA from the University of North Texas and an MFA from East Tennessee State
University. In addition to teaching workshops around the United States, Cadell has taught at
East Tennessee State University and Appalachian State University. She currently teaches high
school art in NC. Her work has been exhibited nationally and featured in publications such as
American Style magazine, Ceramics: Art & Perception and 500 Figures in Clay

Melisa Cadell works in multiple mediums and explores the complicated thoughts that drive humans behavior. Her clay work is most notably characterized by its willingness to question beliefs and actions of the contemporary world. Join us during this class to work through your ideas and build your skills or just to hang out with other sculptors and make work.
What one might bring for class but, not absolutely necessary:

Apron
Spritz Bottle
Plastic to wrap work in
Turn table
Small water container/sponges
Variety of brushes
Favorite sculptural tools: carving tools, wooden tools, flexible steel smooth rib, needle tool, etc
* good photos or sketches of image you want to reproduce sculpturally. Anatomy books and large photos to work from if you have a specific pose in mind.

Artist Bio:
Melisa Cadell is a sculptor and teacher working with high school students in Western NC. She has been sculpting since 1998 with clay, paper and steel. Recently she has been experimenting with video and stop motion. Melisa is most fascinated with what can be relayed in a single thought working out new ways to communicate with her audience. She has taught ceramics and 3 D arts at East Tennessee State University and Appalachian State University. In her spare time she runs rural roads and treasures time with her two children.
