The student finished the work and was shown a photograph of the man... it was so close to the completed head.
"Her many responsibilities," was a look at the myth that a person can have it all. My generation thought we could successfully have it all...the challenge of managing a career and the responsibility of caring for a family. What is important and what is not? The complexity of being a woman includes these thoughts.
I was able to attend a lecture by Garth Clark at Penland School of Arts and Craft on the issues concerning contemporary ceramics. He discussed the future of clay in the Fine Art Scene which I will pass along to students. It has been something in the forefront of my thinking lately when I address young students and their pursuit of ceramics. The world is both larger and smaller because of the available technology. We should be embracing the possibilities as well as preparing for a new approach to our thinking.
